The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) has released their official Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (BMSB) seasonal measures which will run from 1 of September 2026 to 30 of April 2027.
There are no significant changes to the BMSB season dates, target high risk goods, or target risk countries for the 2026-27 season.
Key Changes for the 2026-27 Season include:
New onshore treatment option – Ethyl Formate
DAFF has introduced Ethyl Formate as an additional approved onshore treatment option, providing greater flexibility for eligible consignments requiring treatment.
Rolled Goods Policy removed
The previous Rolled Goods Policy has been removed. Importers of rolled or wrapped cargo should review shipment arrangements to ensure they continue to meet current BMSB requirements.
Safeguarding Scheme removed
The Safeguarding Scheme has been discontinued and is no longer available. Importers can no longer rely on this arrangement and should ensure all affected cargo complies with the published seasonal measures.
The 2026–27 BMSB seasonal measures apply to:
- Targeted goods manufactured in or shipped from target risk countries, and/or
- Vessels that berth at, load, or tranship from target risk countries during the risk season.
Targeted goods subject to BMSB measures and exported between 1 September 2026 and 30 April 2027 (inclusive) must meet Australia’s BMSB treatment requirements
What importers should do:
For shipments departing from the 1 of September 2026:
- Review shipment schedules and purchase orders
- Identify cargo potentially subject to BMSB measures
- Confirm the country of manufacture and export
- Arrange offshore treatment where required
- Allow sufficient time for treatment, certification, and shipping
