Biosecurity Processing and Inspection Delays

The Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment (DAWE) is continuing to experience lengthy biosecurity processing delays. These delays are currently impacting document processing times, inspection booking availabilities and permit application timeframes.

With inspection booking availabilities now in excess of 3 weeks for sea freight consignments, depots are being pushed to capacity. The flow on effects of this include, delayed LCL availability, container detention and storage fees.

Some depots will also be implementing storage fees for cargo awaiting Biosecurity Inspection over the coming weeks.

In a statement released by industry body Freight & Trade Alliance, DAWE has expressed difficulties in the recruitment and retention of biosecurity staff as a contributing factor along with the need for long term biosecurity reform.

Ultimately, while industry reforms will eventually take place, we expect extensive delays to continue for the foreseeable future. We will keep you updated on the situation as it continues to develop.
