Shipping Lines are facing another round of delays after major ports Shanghai were temporarily closed as Typhoon Dolphin struck China’s East Coast, being one of the largest cyclones to make landfall this year.
Typhoon Dolphin closely follows Typhoon Bavi and Typhoon Noul in July, further exacerbating the global supply chain disruptions.
Operations resumed on Monday the 10th of August however shipping data notes 2.4 million TEU’s were displaced with an estimated 400k TEU’s of Australian/New Zealand product being impacted.
Global Supply Disruptions
- Displaced volumes creating backlogs and suspension of booking acceptance
- Vessel bunching and delays of up to 14 days on heavily impacted sailings
- Schedules disruptions/omissions/blanks sailings for schedule recovery
- Increased berthing congestion and lull times including major Asia transhipment hubs
- Equipment imbalance/shortages and increased demand in some locations
- Trucking congestion and turnaround times
- Adjusted and delayed gate in/gate out processing
Short-Term Outlook
The backlog and delays are anticipated to remain elevated throughout August into September with vessel bunching and schedule disruptions across the board. Further factors such as peak season, pre-Christmas cargo volumes and an unstable market throughout 2026 will also contribute to schedule and service unreliability.
